Coverage of costs by health insurance companies: Health insurance companies in Germany cover the costs of psychotherapy provided that the therapists work in one of the four recognized psychotherapeutic procedures (cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, depth psychological psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, systemic psychotherapy).
-
Regulations and fees: The costs for psychotherapeutic treatments are regulated by the fee schedule for psychotherapists (GOP) and the uniform assessment standard (EBM). The costs vary depending on the session length and setting.
-
Deductible: Clients usually have to cover the costs of their treatment themselves and should clarify their financing options in advance to avoid later reimbursement problems.
-
Financing options:
-
Private insurance: Those with private insurance usually receive a (partial) reimbursement of the costs from their insurance company. Requirements may vary depending on the insurance contract.
-
Self-payer: Clients can cover the costs of psychotherapy themselves.
-
Statutory health insurance: In this case, the psychiatrist does not have a direct contract with the statutory health insurance companies. However, it is possible to request reimbursement if there are no registered therapists available.
-
-
Steps for reimbursement of costs with statutory health insurance: Patients must contact the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV) to receive support in finding a therapist. If timely treatment is not available, reimbursement can be requested. Various documents are required, including the PTV11 form, documentation of the therapy search and a medical consultation report.
Process of therapy:
Process: Initial consultation and probatory analysis:
In our first conversation we have the opportunity to get to know each other personally and talk about your current situation. This initial consultation also serves to discuss treatment options. However, the actual psychotherapy only begins after four to five trial sessions. These trial sessions include a detailed diagnosis and anamnesis, during which we analyze your symptoms, your current life situation, your past, your previous experiences with therapy, your personal resources and your individual goals and wishes. After both therapist and client make the decision to begin psychotherapy together, I create an individual treatment plan and submit an application to your health insurance company in which I explain the case and suggest specific treatment.

Short-term psychotherapy:
Short-term treatment typically consists of 12 to 24 sessions of 50 minutes each, which usually take place weekly.

Long-term psychotherapy:
Long-term treatment usually includes between 60 and 80 sessions of 50 minutes each, which also usually take place weekly. In some cases, longer sessions may be required depending on the client's specific needs and goals.
